7 Crucial Requirements for Obtaining a Study Visa in Canada

  • Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institute (DLI) is a prerequisite. The chosen university or institution must possess a COVID-19 readiness plan approved by its respective province or territory, listed among the approved establishments.

  • Proof of financial capability is essential. Demonstrating adequate funds to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation for both oneself and accompanying family members is mandatory.

  • Maintaining a clean criminal record is imperative. Applicants must furnish a police clearance certificate to attest to their law-abiding nature and ensure they pose no threat to the security of Canada.

  • Undergoing an Immigration Medical Examination (IME) is mandatory. A valid medical certificate from a recognized physician, obtained within one week prior to commencing the visa application process, is required to affirm good health and mitigate risks to the Canadian populace.

  • Demonstrating the intention to depart post-education is necessary. Convincing the immigration officer of one’s commitment to leaving the country upon completion of studies is crucial.

  • While not compulsory, proficiency in the English language is highly recommended. Submitting an IELTS score sheet with a minimum band score of 6 for undergraduate programs and 6.5 overall for postgraduate studies can bolster one’s application.

  • Crafting a compelling Statement of Purpose (SOP) significantly influences acceptance chances. A well-written SOP can greatly enhance one’s prospects of admission.

Procedure for Applying for a Student Permit in Canada

Step 1: Seek Admission to a College or University

The initial phase of the Canadian study visa process involves securing acceptance or an offer letter from a recognized educational institution. Canada boasts numerous colleges and universities offering a diverse array of degree programs and study options.

Step 2: Settle Fees

Following receipt of an offer letter, the subsequent step entails the payment of tuition fees to the respective college or university. Payment can typically be facilitated via International Wire Transfer. Upon the institution’s receipt and processing of the fee, a receipt will be issued, which will be necessary for inclusion in the visa application.

Step 3: Obtain GIC

Subsequently, students are required to obtain the Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC). This financial instrument is compulsory for all international students to cover living expenses upon arrival in Canada. The GIC amount is $10,200 and can be procured from participating banks. Administrative charges, approximately $200, are deducted by the bank, though this may vary. Upon arrival in Canada, $2,000 is provided immediately, with the remaining $8,000 disbursed in 12 equal instalments for ongoing living expenses.

Step 4: Undergo Medical Examination

Candidates must undergo a medical examination conducted by a doctor recognized by the Canadian government. Although the examination report is transmitted directly to immigration authorities, a receipt will be issued to the applicant. This receipt is to be submitted during the visa application process.

Step 5: Submit Visa Application

The subsequent step involves the actual submission of the Canadian student visa application.

Step 6: Receive Visa Approval

Upon approval of the application, the Government of Canada will notify the applicant to submit their passport. This can be done either in person or through VFS. Subsequently, the applicant will receive a temporary resident visa along with a letter of introduction.
